Is Mosey really free?

Yes — the core studio is free forever. You can make unlimited mosaics, use every tile type, shape, and layout, and export PNG files without any watermarks. The only things that cost credits are the AI features (background removal, depth maps, palette curation), and print-ready high-resolution exports are Pro-only. Every new account starts with 3 free credits so you can try the AI tools before deciding.

Do I need an account?

No. You can upload a photo, configure your mosaic, and download it as a PNG without ever signing in. An account is only needed if you want to use AI features, save mosaics to your library, or subscribe to Mosey Pro.

How does Mosey turn a photo into a mosaic?

Accepted Answer

Your photo stays on your device throughout. The engine divides the canvas into tile positions based on your chosen layout, samples the average color of each region, then finds the closest matching palette item using LAB color distance — the same color model the human eye uses. The result streams to your browser's GPU via WebGL and updates in real time as you change settings.

What tile content types are available?

Four types: Color (solid colored tiles matched by hue), Image (your own uploaded photos used as the tiles themselves), Google Emoji, and ASCII characters. All four are available on the free plan.

What tile shapes can I use?

Accepted Answer

Seven shapes: square, circle, polygon (with adjustable side count), torus (ring), star, heart, and block. Block is special — it fits each tile to the painted mask of your subject so the tiles conform to the outline of whatever you isolated.

What layout patterns are available?

Thirteen layouts: square grid, adaptive square (tiles resize based on image detail), hexagonal, spiral, Poisson disc (organic natural scatter), triangular, flow field (tiles follow directional vector paths), phyllotaxis (Fibonacci sunflower spiral), rings, halftone (classic dot-screen effect), dithering (Floyd-Steinberg, Atkinson, or Stucki error diffusion), stippling (weighted Lloyd relaxation), and contour (tiles trace luminance level curves).

What can I do with AI credits?

Three things, each costing one credit: Background Removal cuts your subject away from its background using a neural network. Depth Map generates a grayscale depth image from your photo, which the 3D renderer uses to vary tile height across the scene. AI Palette Curation suggests a curated emoji or image palette that matches the mood of your photo.

How do AI credits work?

One credit = one AI operation. Credits come in two buckets: subscription credits (included with Pro, 200 per month, reset on your billing date) and purchased credits (never expire, stack freely on top of subscription credits). Every new account starts with 3 free credits. Subscription credits are used first when you run an AI feature.

What is 3D mode?

3D mode switches the rendering engine from PixiJS (2D WebGL) to Three.js (3D WebGL). Tiles become actual 3D geometry — extruded blocks lit with directional lighting and ambient occlusion. You can orbit, pan, and zoom the scene in your browser. If you have a depth map, tiles rise and fall in height to mirror the spatial structure of your photo.

Where are my photos processed?

All mosaic rendering runs in your browser on your device's GPU and CPU — nothing is uploaded during normal use. The only exception is AI features: when you trigger background removal, depth-map generation, or palette curation, a compressed copy of your photo is sent to fal.ai for processing. That file is configured to auto-delete within 30 seconds. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Do you sell or share my data?

No. We don't sell or share your personal data for advertising. We use PostHog for analytics (consent-gated via the cookie banner — nothing is sent until you accept) and Stripe for payments (your card details never touch our servers).

What export formats are available?

Accepted Answer

PNG for all users, and GLB for 3D mosaics. PNG exports a flat image. GLB exports the complete 3D scene — geometry, materials, and lighting — for use in Blender, Unity, or any GLB-compatible viewer.

Do I own the mosaics I make?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely. You keep full ownership of your uploaded photos and all generated mosaics. Mosey claims no rights to either. Use your exports for personal projects, client work, merchandise, or marketing — no additional license required.

What does Pro cost?

Pro is $5.00 per month or $50.00 per year (billed annually). It includes 200 AI credits per month, print-ready high-resolution exports, the ability to save up to 50 mosaics, and priority email support. Cancel any time with one click.

Can I buy credits without a Pro subscription?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Credit packs are available as a one-time purchase from the Pricing page — no subscription required. Purchased credits never expire and stack on top of any subscription credits you already have. They work across all three AI features: background removal, depth maps, and palette curation.
